Becoming Poor is a self-managed reading group at the University of Washington. It is based in the College of Built Environments, but it is open to people beyond the college as well. We tend to read and discuss work that falls broadly in the categories of spatial, political, and urban theory. We are serious about the work. We also have fun. We are interested in theory for theory’s sake, but we also seek theory that can inform action to create another world.
Many participants are students in either the Ph.D. in the Built Environment or the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Urban Design and Planning. Again, the group is open to other participants, both faculty and students in other programs, and those beyond the UW.
